Choosing the right plant for your earthworks programme

On most earthworks programmes the biggest cost driver is not the rate on the machine. It is whether the machine is the right one for the material, the volume and the finish the specification asks for. Put a grader where an excavator belongs and you will pay for it twice.

Start with the material, not the machine

Sand, calcrete, weathered rock and black cotton soil all behave differently under a blade. Before we price a job we want to know what the ground is, how deep the layer runs and how far the material has to travel. That single answer usually narrows the fleet down to two options rather than ten.

Match volume to cycle time

Bulk cut and fill over long hauls is a dozer and tipper job. Trenching, foundations and confined work belong to excavators and TLBs. Final shaping, camber and drainage on roads and hardstands is grader work, and it is the stage most often under-resourced on a programme that is already running late.

Plan for support, water and access

A machine that cannot be fuelled, serviced or watered is a machine that is not working. On remote sites in Ghanzi and the Kgalagadi we plan bowsers, service intervals and haul road maintenance into the programme from day one, because the downtime nobody budgeted for is what pushes handover dates out.

What we bring

OddBall runs its own plant fleet, so the machine on your site is one we maintain and operate ourselves. That means one point of contact for the plant, the operators and the earthworks scope rather than three separate contracts to coordinate.
